Where to Vote

Voter Photo ID

Voters must present a valid photo ID when voting in person. If you do not have a valid photo ID card, you may obtain one from the Orange County Board of Elections, 208 S Cameron St., Hillsborough, NC on Monday-Friday (8:00am-5:00pm).

If you do not have a valid photo ID card, you may still vote and have your vote counted by signing an affidavit of reasonable impediment (or “Photo ID Exception Form”) explaining why you have not presented a valid photo ID.

As an alternative, if you don’t have your ID when you vote, you can still vote and then bring your valid photo ID to your county board of elections by 5 p.m. on Thursday November 14, 2024.

What Photo ID Can I Use?

  • NC Driver’s License
  • US Passport Book/US Passport Card
  • State ID from NCDMB (non-operator ID)
  • NC Voter Photo ID card issued by Orange County Board of Elections
  • College/university student ID approved by the N.C. State Board of Elections
  • Charter school employee ID approved by the N.C. State Board of Elections
  • State/local government employee ID approved by the N.C. State Board of Elections
  • Driver’s license/non-driver ID from another state, DC, or US territory

Note: A voter 65 or older may use an expired form of acceptable ID if the ID was unexpired on their 65th birthday.

Any of the following, regardless of whether the ID contains an expiration or issuance date:

  • Military or Veteran ID card issued by the US government
  • Tribal enrollment card issued by a State or federally recognized tribe
  • ID card issued by US government agency or the State of NC for a public assistance program

– Absentee Voting by Mail –

All registered Orange County voters are eligible to vote by mail using an absentee ballot. Voters who vote by mail must include a photocopy of an acceptable Voter Photo ID when returning their ballot, or they may complete an ID Exception Form.

Absentee Voting by mail begins September 6, 2024. Absentee by mail ballots (returned by mail or in person) must be received in the Orange County Board of Elections office by 7:30 pm on November 5, 2024, in order to be eligible to be counted.

Same Day Registration During Early Voting

Eligible voters can register, update their registration and vote at the same time at any Early Voting Site.

You will need to show an acceptable Photo ID and an additional document to prove your current address (e.g. utility bill). Voters cannot register to vote on Election Day (November 5).

If you vote on Election Day you must cast a ballot at your specific precinct polling location.
